Sandy Springs may help buy flood-prone homes

Sandy Springs is gathering information on structures in the city that are in flood-prone areas, the first step in seeing whether it will buy those homes.

The information and analysis could result in the city using state and federal funds to buy the properties to avoid future flooding problems like those seen after a heavy rainstorm in September 2009.

Homes will be considered if they were flooded in those storms, are in a federal flood plain and suffered damages worth half of value of the home in the past decade.
