The city of Sandy Springs is moving to join the Sister Cities program.

At Tuesday night’s Sandy Springs City Council meeting, members approved a recommendation to establish a relationship with the Western Galilee Cluster of cities in Israel. The cluster is said to have a combined population of 100,000 and interests in such industries as medical technology, information technology and tourism — all similar to Sandy Springs.

The recommendation came from the city’s Economic Development Committee in conjunction with the local chamber of commerce officials. The groups said that potential economic development benefits and cultural and educational opportunities drove the recommendation.

The Sister Cities program fosters long-term partnerships between cities in the U.S. and others in more than 130 countries around the world.
