The Sandy Springs Police Response Vehicle — a specially-equipped, yellow-and-black Ford F-350 pickup — recently debuted and has already assisted a number of motorists with gas, tows out of tight spots and help getting their vehicles out of traffic lanes.

The vehicle is equipped similarly to a Highway Emergency Response Operator unit with barricades, fire extinguishers, an air compressor, jumper cables and other motorist-helping gear, said Jeff Holmes, who coordinates volunteer programs for Sandy Springs police. He said the vehicle will be mostly staffed by volunteers from the Citizens on Patrol Unit.

The SSRV will primarily work city streets during the morning and afternoon commute, leaving Interstate 285 and Ga. 400 to HERO units.
