Sandy Springs businesses beware: the taxman could come knocking at your door.

The Sandy Springs City Council has O.K.’d a contract with Revenue Discovery Systems for an audit aimed at ensuring businesses are paying their license, franchise, waste hauler and other city fees. Spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said the firm will get in touch with businesses not on the city’s current tax registration list that appear to be operating in the city to ensure that either they’ve complied with the rules or are exempt.

Under the contract, the city will pay a 27 percent fee to RDS for the work.

Also Tuesday night, the council approved an ordinance regulating consumer fireworks sales, ending a moratorium. The ordinance limit sales to the city’s commercial 2 zone and bans sales within 150 feet of hospitals, daycares, nursing homes, schools and homes.

Prospective sellers will have to apply to the city at least 45 days in advance and the city fire marshal’s office will oversee permitting.
