Returning to an issue discussed a year ago, the Roswell City Council is asking the Georgia Legislature to approve term limits for Council members and to clarify that the limits on their terms and the mayor’s are for future terms, not past ones.
The Council voted 4-1 Monday to ask the General Assembly to amend the city charter to limit council members to three consecutive, full, 4-year terms.
A measure asking the Legislature to clarify the three-term limit on the mayor’s office passed on a 3-1 vote. Mayor Jere Wood recused himself from the discussion.
The Council passed similar resolutions last year, but city officials opted not to take them to the Legislature at that time.
Also last year, a resident filed suit challenging Wood's election to a fifth term as mayor. First elected in 1997, Wood advocated in 2010 for the Roswell mayor to have a term limit of three four-year terms. He has said the intent was that the clock would start for him when the law was passed, and not when he was first elected.
