After years of faithful service with the Roswell Police Department, K-9 Officer Liva is being retired to live with her handler, Sgt. Joseph Fortunato.

The City Council approved a sales agreement “for $0,” according to council minutes, to let Fortunato purchase Liva, a Belgian Malinois the officer has trained and worked with for the last six years.

“Liva is being retired … and it is in the city’s interest that further care of the canine be the responsibility of the buyer,” according to the sales agreement. The Police Department may seek funds in the 2020 fiscal year to purchase and train a new K-9 to replace Liva, staff said in a report to the council.
