Roswell Fire Department hiring battalion chiefs, changing logo

Two changes – one substantial and one symbolic -- are under way at the Roswell Fire Department.

Three full-time battalion chiefs are being hired. This will bring to 18 the number of full-time workers in the 140-employee fire department.

Almost all the firefighters are part-timers who hold full-time jobs with departments in neighboring jurisdictions, Roswell Chief Ricky Spencer said. The fulltimers are command staff, support staff and employees of the fire marshal's office.

Spencer also wants to introduce a new uniform patch to reflect the step toward what he calls a “hybrid department.”

He said a committee of firefighters designed  the patch. The city council will vote on it Aug. 23.

The new patch is round with the letters RFD in the middle surrounded by firefighting and emergency rescue symbols, the word “fire” and the city logo. Firefighters now wear a patch with Roswell City Hall as the dominant image.

“This was a good time to bring a new patch forward, a new beginning for the department,” he said.

Spencer wants to order 1,000 patches at 98 cents per patch. Firetruck logos will not change.
