Tomato stew in a cooler at an Ethiopian restaurant in Stone Mountain had a mold-like growth, said a DeKalb County health inspector.
And air temperature in the walk-in cooler was 10 degrees over the maximum allowed for food safety. Numerous food items were discarded.
The inspector noted that Daallo Restaurant, 5037 Memorial Drive, still did not have a certified food safety manager on staff, and the manager in charge had limited knowledge of food-borne disease prevention or of food operations.
Daallo failed the routine inspection with 60/U. The previous two scores were both 100/A.
No one at the restaurant could remember when the contaminated tomato stew had been prepared. It was discarded. Cheese, milk and chicken and rice in the cooler were all at unsafe temperatures. The cheese and milk were discarded and the chicken and rice, which had been prepared that morning, were moved to the freezer for rapid cooling.
Among other code violations, some food items had been stored inside grocery bags and placed in the cooler. An employee was eating at a coffee service station at the front of the restaurant. The front door was propped open, allowing for the entry of pests. The back door had gaps so that daylight shone through. Both hot and cold water had been shut off at the vegetable sink.
Daallo Restaurant will be re-inspected.
