The Foster House, a restaurant in downtown Cumming, failed a recent routine health inspection with various code infractions, including some elevated temperatures on potentially hazardous cold foods.

Butter blend packets sitting in an ice bath were at 80 degrees, according to the inspection report. They were thrown away. Eggs in a walk-in cooler were also well above the safe temperature range of 42 degrees, and were also discarded. And buttermilk was thrown away because it was too warm.

The inspector took off points because an employee touched corn bread with a bare hand. And the restaurant had a repeat violation of employees prepping food without wearing proper hair restraint.

The Foster House, 305 W. Main St., Cumming, scored 41/U, a significant drop from its previous scores of 82/B and 87/B.

In other code violations, employees were not using disposable paper towels when cleaning surfaces with a sanitizing spray. Also, the spray bottle was not labeled.

Single-use plastic containers were being reused. The vegetable sink was being used for other purposes. Raw meats and raw eggs were stored above and next to ready-to-eat foods in a cooler.

The inspector also noted the facility needed cleaning. Equipment was soiled with food debris and grease accumulation, according to the report. Floors were also dirty with food and dirt under the equipment and along the baseboards. There was food debris and trash on the ground in the refuse area.

The Foster House will be re-inspected.
