The 1996 Honda Accord, 1996 Chevrolet full-sized pickup truck and 2000 Honda Civic are among the top three stolen vehicles in Georgia, according to "Hot Wheels," a list of the top 10 stolen automobiles in the country issued Tuesday by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
"Hondas are always popular," said David Colmans, executive director of the Georgia Insurance Information Service. "Cars like that get shipped all around the world for parts."
Colmans says that some trends for stolen vehicles depend on locality. "Pickup trucks are often very popular trends in southern states," he said.
For the first time since 2002, thieves nationwide preferred domestic makes over foreign brands, according to the Crime Bureau report.
Ford took three spots, Dodge two and Chevrolet one, while the remaining four were held by Honda, Toyota and Acura. However, the top three positions continue to be held by Honda and Toyota models, a trend that has been consistent since 2000.
Improved technology has proved effective in lowering theft rates. Hot Wheels statistics shows that of the nearly 52,000 Honda Accords stolen in 2010, more than 44,000 were models made in the 1990s compared with fewer than 5,700 produced since the year 2000.
Other vehicles on the Georgia top 10 list were the 1997 Ford F150 series, 1999 Toyota Camry, 1999 Dodge Caravan, 2003 Dodge Ram, 2002 Ford Explorer, 1997 Ford Taurus and 2004 Chevrolet Impala.
