Work on phase two of Renfroe Middle School’s new construction/renovation should begin shortly after May 27, City Schools Decatur’s last day of school.

According to Project Manager Jeff Prine this phase includes demolition of the existing chorus and engineering building, to be replaced by a two-story addition housing a new kitchen, cafeteria, science classrooms and administration offices. The existing kitchen/cafeteria gets renovated into new engineering, chorus and music classrooms.

Site work, utilities work and demolition commences in late May, with construction starting later this summer. The work should finish in time for opening day of the 2017-18 school year. The $15.8 million cost comes out of the general obligation bond passed by voters last November.

Prine said that based on enrollment projections, Phase Two along with the 12 modular units already on site should get Renfroe through the 2020-21 school year. There are yet no funding sources for Phase Three, whose several options include a thorough renovation of the school’s front.

Phase one, the 14-classroom building fronting the gym, should finish in the next few weeks.
