A baby crocodile that can fit in a human hand is the newest resident of a Florida alligator farm, according to a media report.

The gharial hatched this month in St. Augustine is the first one born in the Western Hemisphere, according to the Florida-Times Union. The species is native to India and is listed as endangered, according to the Smithsonian National Zoo Park.

The alligator farm brought in a male gharial from the Bronx Zoo to mate with the park’s female, director John Brueggen said.

Gharials are picky breeders, Brueggen said. In the wild, they’ll only nest on tall sand banks, so the farm built one inside its gharial exhibit.
