A Georgia Power substation off Tara Boulevard may be at the root of Clayton County’s massive power outage, county emergency management officials said Thursday afternoon.

It’s unclear what caused the problem at the substation, which serves between 10,000 and 16,000 people.

“Georgia Power told us they’re working on it. We’re sort of at their mercy on that end. We’re waiting on Georgia Power to get their trucks here,” said Jacque Feilke, deputy chief of Clayton’s Fire and Emergency Services.

In the meantime, a couple of warming stations have been opened to help people who’ve been without power, in some cases, more than 24 hours.

Riverdale has one at its City Hall Annex, 6690 Church St., and for those in northwest Clayton, Northcutt Elementary in College Park is serving as a warming station. The elementary school is at 5451 West Fayetteville Rd.
