Powder Springs Mayor Al Thurman and the City Council will hold three public hearings on a proposed tax increase.

While they are proposing to keep the same millage rate of 8.5 — the same as it has been since 2011 — an increase in property taxes by 6.58 percent would be needed.

The anticipated annual tax increase for a house with a fair market value of $125,000 is about $26.25 and, for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $175,000, around $36.75.

Hearings are planned for noon July 11 and 7 p.m. July 18 in the Council Chambers, Powder Springs Community Development Building, 4488 Pineview Drive, Powder Springs.

Between those meetings, the second hearing will be held at 6 p.m. July 13 in the second floor conference room, Powder Springs City Hall, 4484 Marietta St., Powder Springs.

The millage rate is expected to be approved following the final public hearing during the 7 p.m. July 18 meeting.
