Did you hear the one about the turtle that tried to cross the road?

It was a 50-pound snapping turtle, and it was no laughing matter Tuesday in Dunwoody. That's when police were called to Crowne Pointe Parkway, where the turtle had been struck by a vehicle.

With the help of passersby, officers helped move the massive snapper from the roadway and into a large cardboard box before transporting her to the nearby All Creatures Animal Hospital, police said.

The turtle has a cracked shell, but she's going to be fine, according to Sgt. Mike Carlson with Dunwoody police.

The department posted "news" of the injured reptile on its Facebook page, prompting numerous comments and "likes" from concerned citizens.

"Thank goodness she was rescued," one poster wrote. "Bless her heart."

Once she's healed, she'll be returned to the wild, hopefully in a swampy area, Susan Lassiter, hospital administrator, told the AJC Tuesday afternoon.

"We expect a full recovery," Lassiter said.
