Avondale Estates City Planner Keri Stevens won’t completely rule out a roundabout for the Clarendon Avenue/U.S. 278 intersection, but a recent demonstration project shows it’s an awkward fit. Using surveyor flags to illustrate dimensions, the demonstration had the roundabout taking one-third of Dewey Brown Plaza, part of the original town layout and included on the National Register of Historic Places. Infringing on an historic site, Stevens said, makes it hard to acquire federal funding. Avondale expects to see several options for improvements to the 278 corridor — including a revised roundabout — in late January from consultant Nelson/Nygaard.
