MARTA’s Georgia State rail station was shut down early Wednesday after a man was hit by a train and killed.

The incident happened before 5:30 a.m.

The identity of the man killed was not immediately available. MARTA spokesman Lyle Harris told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that investigators are trying to determine what he was doing in an unauthorized area when he was hit by the train, which was not carrying any customers at the time.

Harris said the Georgia State station remained closed at 7 a.m. A “bus bridge” was set up to ferry passengers between the Five Points, Georgia State and King Memorial stations.

About 6 a.m., MARTA tweeted, “We are currently single-tracking from King Memorial, Georgia State, Five Points, and Dome. Trains will not stop at Georgia State.”
