Pedestrian struck, killed in hit-and-run near Cobb Parkway

A Cobb County man was struck by a hit-and-run driver late Sunday after getting out of a disabled car on I-285, police said.

The incident happened just before 11:30 p.m. on I-285 westbound near Cobb Parkway.

Cobb police Sgt. Dana Pierce said investigators believe a man driving a 2008 Nissan Versa ran out of gas, the car coming to a stop in the gore area alongside the interstate.

“While the car was sitting between the right westbound travel lane and the ramp from northbound I-75 to westbound I-285, a male occupant got out of the disabled car in an attempt to cross the ramp,” Pierce said in an email.

He said Harry Maurent, 30, of Austell, was struck by “what investigators believe was a light-colored, mid-size pickup or sport utility vehicle.”

The driver of that vehicle, which was possibly a Saturn SUV, fled the scene, according to Pierce. He said the vehicle is likely to have front-end damage, including damage to the headlight assembly.

“After being struck by the first hit-and-run vehicle, the victim was struck by three other vehicles while he was down in the roadway,” Pierce said. “All three of those drivers are cooperating with investigators.”

Pierce asked that anyone with information on the incident or the hit-and-run vehicle or driver call investigators at 770-499-3987.
