Police performed a scheduled crime sweep with added passion Friday, removing 32 suspects from Clayton County streets.
Sheriff Victor Hill, of the Clayton County Sheriff's Office, said a hunt for wanted suspects was renamed "Operation Fallen Hero" in honor of Major Greg Barney, who sacrificed his life Thursday in the line of duty.
“Barney relentlessly pursued a criminal when he made the ultimate sacrifice, and in his memory, we will continue to relentlessly pursue them all without fear or hesitation,” Hill said in an emailed statement.
Barney was shot and killed while helping Clayton officers execute a no-knock warrant. The suspect, Jerand Ross, ran out the back door with two handguns, police said.
One of the men arrested in Friday’s roundup, Malcolm Montgomery, who was wanted out of Gwinnett County, refused to open or come to the door when deputies arrived, Hill said.
Though police said he was fully clothed when found, Montgomery told police he was sleeping and did not hear anyone at the door.
