Ex-officer accused of stealing $25,000 from police charity fund

Sept 7, 2011

A former Rome police officer is accused of taking $25,000 from a charity fund, Channel 2 Action News reported Tuesday.

Kerry Wagner, who worked for the Rome Police Department for more than 20 years, is charged with three counts of theft by taking and one count of violating an oath of office, the report said. He bonded out of the Floyd County Jail on Sunday.

GBI agents accused him of taking the money from the Coosa Valley Fraternal Order of Police while working as the group's treasurer, a post he held for eight years before retiring last year.

The group's president, Ghee Wilson, told Channel 2 that Wagner has repaid the organization.
