The Milton City Council has had a first presentation of a measure setting development standards for gas stations, including stations with convenience stores, in certain parts of the city.

The text amendment, drafted after the council approved a moratorium May 7 on the submittal of gas station plans, sets standards for areas outside the Deerfield and Crabapple Form Based Codes, staff said in a report to the council.

“These standards are similar to the requirements that exist in the Form Based Code areas of the city,” staff said.

No more than eight fuel pumps would be permitted on a site, and they’d have to be to the side or rear of the principal structure. Accessory car washes and emission testing stations would be excluded. The measure also addresses issues of appearance, lighting and distance from neighboring properties.

The measure is to return to the council Sept. 24.
