The Milton City Council has approved, with conditions, a private school’s plan to grow in size and enrollment to 220 students from 150 currently.

The Milton Montessori School at 3505 Bethany Bend is zoned for office-institutional use and has a use permit to operate a private school, according to a staff report to the council. It seeks to grow to 9,500 square feet from 6,000 square feet.

The school is on 2.89 acres and proposed expanding beyond its current preschool to include elementary school classes, staff said. The 3,500-square-foot expansion would take place within the attic of a newly constructed building.

Conditions include limiting enrollment to 220 students and the hours of operation to 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; and that the school be responsible for the costs of a traffic study and improvements if Public Works determines a left turn lane from Bethany Bend is needed.

The council also granted a concurrent variance to decrease the landscape strip from 20 to zero feet where the existing turnaround is located.
