Parents of children who use the Snapchat social media app should take steps to “ghost mode” their youngsters to protect them from strangers, Milton police recommend.
The police department issued an advisory to parents recently, telling of a new "Snap Map" feature that lets people pinpoint "the user's exact location right down to the street where the user made their last post. More importantly, you don't have to be friends with that user in order to access the information."
To prevent this, police say, go into the Snapchat settings on your child’s mobile device and select the option for “Only Me (Ghost Mode).”
“Children are some of our most vulnerable residents, and they’re often the most trusting, and this can put them at risk,” Milton Police Chief Rich Austin said in a statement. “We don’t want to discourage the use of social media altogether, but we want to help ensure that our adults and children are informed users.”
