A military shell thought to date back several decades was found under a Hall County home Thursday morning.

A property owner found the device in the crawl space of the Garden Boulevard home while doing renovations and called police, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

Explosive experts from the GBI confirmed the device was an artillery shell. But investigators were unable to determine what type of shell it was, due to its degraded condition. The area around the home was temporarily evacuated while an Army team from Fort Benning removed the device from the property, police said. It is expected to be exploded at another location.

Investigators have not determined how long the device may have been under the home or how it got there. The house currently is vacant, but has been occupied on and off for several decades, police said.
