The State Board of Education is set to meet Tuesday July 26 to consider recommending to the governor that he remove the Atlanta school board en masse. A new state law requires the state board to hold a hearing for any local school board that's in a system currently not fully accredited -- and that means Atlanta Public Schools and Coffee County Schools in south Georgia. Coffee County has a hearing set for Wednesday, and the governor isn't required by the new law to follow the state board's recommendation. NANCY BADERTSCHER

The Fulton commission will commit an extra $750,000 to the Arts & Culture Department in next year's budget, covering a shortfall created when the Finance Department moved millions in unspent grant monies into the countywide general fund during last year's budget balancing. Included in the millions were funds still owed to dozens of arts groups for 2010 and 2009 service contracts, which stirred fears of slashes to arts spending.
The commission voted, as part of Wednesday's consent agenda, to follow County Manager Zachary Williams' recommended solution. JOHNNY EDWARDS
