Each year, more than a million people head out to the 850 miles of trails in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. But often, the hikers, bikers, hunters, equestrians and motorized users compete for space and have conflicting goals. For almost a year, the Forest Service has brought out these groups to hash out their differences and find ways to co-exist. This weekend, the groups will roll out a plan called CoTrails at the conference center at Uniqoi State Park near Helen. The two-day conference, today and tomorrow, will have trails classes, seminars and field sessions. There will be more sessions in the upcoming months. Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis has released a series “priorities” that will guide an upcoming redistricting.
Davis said he wants to avoid splitting up neighborhoods and avoid closing a high-performing school to send students to a lower performing one. He wants to eliminate freestanding ninth-grade academies, and to keep the school “cluster” concept in tact.
The full list of priorities is posted at the district’s website, www.atlantapublicschools.us. The next round of community meetings on the redistricting is scheduled for Jan. 30 – Feb. 2. Davis plans to make his final recommendations to the board in March or April. JAIME SARRIO

Georgia Tech will receive $7 million total in federal grants and matching state and private money to lead a national transportation research center, Gov. Nathan Deal announced Friday.
Tech researchers will focus on highway safety and other transportation issues through being named one of 10 National Tier One university transportation centers.
Tech's center is made up of colleges in Alabama, Florida and Georgia, including University of Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Southern Polytechnic State and Clark Atlanta universities and Spelman College. LAURA DIAMOND
