Bonita Jacobs started Friday as the first female president of North Georgia College & State University. The State Board of Regents hired her in May.
She replaces David Potter, who retired Thursday after having served as president since 2005.
Jacobs previously served as executive director of the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students at the University of North Texas. LAURA DIAMOND

The Georgia Department of Human Services has scheduled a public hearing to receive comments on the state's plan for spending Community Services Block Grant money. The CSBG program pays for community programs designed to combat poverty. The public hearing will be July 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2 Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta,on the 19th floor. The 30-day public review of the plan began on Friday June 17, 2011 and will continue through Monday July 18, 2011. CARRIE TEEGARDIN
