A mediation judge will meet Tuesday with the Clayton County Board of Commissioners and tax commissioner in an effort to resolve their ongoing disputes over tax-collection payments and county-issued vehicles.

Tax Commissioner Terry Baskin and the board members have been at odds for more than a year over the tax collection payment schedule. The county says, by law, taxes must be turned in on a monthly basis; Baskin says it is within his right to turn the collections in quarterly.

The two sides also have had an ongoing dispute over county vehicle assignments. Baskin was arrested during the summer in 2010 for refusing to surrender his county-issued, take-home vehicles. He was released the same day after he was given a citation for obstruction. At the time, the county was trying to reduce its vehicle fleet to create potential savings in its fiscal 2011 budget.

Tuesday's hearing begins at 9 a.m. in the conference room of the county administration complex in Jonesboro and is expected to last all day.  The hearing is not open to the public.
