Marietta’s Historic Preservation Commission will hold the first of two public hearings on design guidelines for the new Church-Cherokee Streets Historic District at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Main Fire Station, Room B/C, 112 Haynes St., Marietta.
The guidelines comprise 122 pages, covering rehabilitation of existing structures, additions, new construction and demolition of existing structures.
This district would include 124 properties, even one over the owner’s objection.
That five-acre property is Ivy Grove at 473 Cherokee St., built in 1845, and owned since last month by Marietta Councilman Philip Goldstein.
Goldstein said he does not want to be told what to do with its appearance by the city, noting the precedent set when certain property owners were permitted to opt out of being included in the Kennesaw Avenue Historic District - two of those being historic houses built in 1838 and 1849.
Once the guidelines are adopted by the commission, the city staff will send ballots to the property owners. With at least 60 percent approving, another public hearing will be held before the final decision.
The commission will draw the draft of the map and the City Council can change the draft guidelines.
The guidelines may be accessed at www.mariettaga.gov/City/media/Docs/Planzone/DRAFTCCDGs2016.pdf
