The Marietta City Council agreed Wednesday to allow the city’s tourism groups to apply for an extra $100,000 in September from the 3 percent auto tourism funds in next year’s budget.

Also, council members agreed to provide $180,000 in next year’s tourism budget for capital projects.

Steve Imler, an Earl Smith Strand Theatre volunteer, asked the council to allow equipment upgrades and fixtures to be included in those capital projects, which he said can make the difference in whether audience members will return.

Tourism grants include: $207,375 to the Marietta Welcome Center; $128,697 to the Marietta Museum of History; $60,000 to the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art; $43,000 to The Branding Project; $40,222 to the Gone With the Wind Museum; $40,000 to the Strand Theatre; $38,558 for the lease of 18 Whitlock Ave.; $38,000 to the Marietta Fire Museum; $20,000 to Atlanta Lyric Theatre; $15,000 to the Georgia Symphony Orchestra; $8,000 to Friends of Brown Park; $4,500 to Zion Baptist Church; $3,000 to Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society; $3,000 to Symphony on the Square; and $2,547 to Friends of Brumby Hall.
