A man who barricaded himself in a house off Atherton Drive on Wednesday afternoon surrendered to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team without incident after negotiations, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Students heading home from schools in the area — Bethune Middle, Columbia Middle, Towers High and Columbia High — were kept at the schools until the situation was resolved, Channel 2 said.
Authorities believe the man, Eric Taylor, was in the home alone, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Kyle Jones said.
The standoff began when deputies attempted to serve a warrant for Taylor’s arrest on felony probation violation from a Rockdale County robbery, Jones said.
When deputies presented Taylor with the warrant, Jones said the man shut the door and bolted it locked and ran back into the house.
Jones said deputies considered Taylor dangerous, “given the fact that he barricaded himself inside house and the nature of the warrant.”
A DeKalb County Police SWAT Team that was training near the location joined with sheriff’s deputies for back-up, police said.
