Lockheed Martin announced Thursday plans to eliminate about 1,500 positions across its aeronautics business area, according to company officials.

The job cuts are part of a plan to cut product costs and increase efficiency. The reductions will have the most impact at Lockheed’s larger aeronautics sites in Texas, California and Marietta, Georgia, which account for 28,000 employees.

It is not yet known how many of Marietta’s 8,000 aeronautics employees will be affected, said Erica Crosling, spokeswoman for Lockheed’s Marietta location.

The company plans to conduct an organizational assessment before the layoffs begin. The assessment should be completed by mid-August, Crosling said. Once completed, employees eligible for voluntary layoffs will be notified in August, and involuntary layoffs will begin in September.

The layoffs are not targeted toward one program and the cuts are not customer-driven, Crosling said, but customer needs have motivated Lockheed to lower overhead costs.

None of the 1,500 aeronautics positions slated for elimination are union-represented positions. Lockheed still anticipates adding 400 union-represented production positions announced earlier this year.
