The Lawrenceville City Council recently voted to approve the purchase of 70 Glock Model 17 9MM and 80 Glock 26LE 9MM firearms. The $64,275 purchase is funded in part using $40,515 in Capital Improvement Plan funds, a trade-in credit of $23,760 for current weapons, and $3,085 in confiscated assets.

The new weapons will replace officers’ primary weapons which are 5 years old and provide each officer with a backup weapon. The department is changing caliber from .40 to 9MM. The change to 9MM is expected to allow for higher ammunition capacity and less recoil.

According to city documents, “by providing each officer with a city issued back up weapon, the department achieves uniformity with back up weapons and mitigates issues with personally owned back up weapons that may arise in an officer involved shooting.”

The city obtained three bids with Ed’s Public Safety providing the lowest bid.
