Lawrenceville officials warned residents late last week that routine monitoring of the city’s drinking water found the presence of coliform bacteria during April 2015. Two samples showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The standard is no more than one sample per month may find coliform.
In the city’s announcement, citizens were informed the situation did not create an emergency and there is no need to boil water or take any other precautions. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present. Follow-up testing found no evidence of more dangerous bacteria like fecal coliform or E. coli.
In an abundance of caution, the city has disinfected the distribution system and water lines have been flushed. No coliform has been found in additional samples taken. Additional information: www.lawrencevillega.org, or Steve Stubblefield at 678-824-6506.
