"Pokemon Go" trainers, be careful around Buford Dam! That advice, by the federal agency responsible for Lake Sidney Lanier, cautions people playing the popular Nintendo smart phone game not to wander into unsafe or restricted areas.
"We do support initiatives that draw people of all ages to explore and enjoy the great outdoors," the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says in a Facebook posting. "However, due to safety and trespassing concerns … we want to address the issue to any eager trainers in the area."
The Corps reminds players, or trainers, that they’re welcome to safely use public areas, but restricted areas, like the building on top of the dam, are off-limits. Trainers shouldn’t play while driving, nor pull over along the dam or on the sides of roads to catch Pokémon, but park only in designated parking spots. They should remain aware of their surroundings and respect other park users.
Pokémon Go uses the GPS and camera functions of smart phones to guide players to animated characters they can “capture.” Some have followed their phones to places they’re not welcome – like hospitals, cemeteries and private property.
