The Kennesaw City Council voted 3-2 Monday to review the legal implications of eliminating health care and pension benefits for Mayor Mark Mathews and the five City Council members.
Opposed were Councilmen Leonard Church and Tim Killingsworth.
Supporters were Councilman Jim Sebastian and Councilwomen Debra Williams and Cris Eaton-Welsh.
Chair of the city’s Benefits Committee, Welsh has been promoting these eliminations, saying health care benefits for all part-time elected officials cost $15,000 per official each year.
Also, the city pays $15,980 per year to fund the city’s portion of pension benefits for elected officials.
She proposes freezing pension benefits for current elected officials until retirement age.
Welsh recommends these changes go into effect on Dec. 31.
