The Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation, a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, recently unveiled its new statewide public service campaign at the Georgia State Capitol, according to a press release.
“As an organization, we’re committed to making Georgia a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live,” said Natalie Johnston-Russell, executive director of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation. “Ending litter is one of our primary initiatives, alongside reducing waste, promoting recycling, and beautifying communities.”
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, litter costs the state $10 million per year in cleanup efforts, not including the costs incurred on the local level by cities and counties. Litter has a negative impact on economic development, health, and safety across Georgia, and it also harms wildlife and the environment.
“Litter is a huge blight on our landscape,” said Johnston-Russell. “We view our statewide litter awareness campaign, which will be promoted in partnership with our network of city and county Keep America Beautiful affiliates, as a wonderful way for us to further our mission to educate and inspire Georgians to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment.”
The Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation leads more than 70 city and county and affiliates across the state, providing them with the tools and resources they need to engage more than 93,000 volunteers in environmental preservation efforts. Over the past year, this network collected over 2 million pounds of litter, cleaning 30,795 miles of public land and 931 miles of rivers, lakes, shores, and wetlands.
