A 10-year-old Decatur boy, struck by a car while riding his bicycle at 7:25 Thursday morning, was taken to the hospital with a foot injury that didn’t prove serious, according to Lt. Jennifer Ross.
The bicycle was traveling west through a crosswalk on College Avenue when hit by a car going north on Mead Road. No citations were issued.
But the incident highlights the long-delayed pedestrian/bike trail between Mead and Olympic Place. When finished later this year that trail should remove, at least for one block, many of those children currently riding or walking to school along busy College.
The 350-foot trail will follow an old alley running through the back yards of homes fronting College. City Commissioners approved the project in July 2014, and the delay stems from having to acquire easements from those private-property owners, according to Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon.
The final easement was acquired last January, and Saxon said he hopes to recommend a contractor to commissioners on June 6.
The trail is packaged with the rebuilding of seven downtown crosswalks and one sidewalk. Saxon said, assuming approval is forthcoming, work on the entire package should begin in July and take roughly four months.
