A horse that was rescued from a hole in Cherokee County died early Tuesday.

Patty Sloan, who owns Timber Ridge Farms, where the accident occurred, said the 4-year-old horse, named Glory, died around 12:45 a.m. en route to the University of Georgia veterinary hospital in Athens.

"I could feel her move in the trailer and then she really started to fight hard," Sloan said.

She said Glory did not have any physical injuries, but died from the combination of the stress she endured during the ordeal and the drugs used to sedate her.

"It just overstressed her system," Sloan said. "Unfortunately we were not able to save her."

The horse was not euthanized, she said. "We were doing everything we could to save that horse."

She praised the firefighters and veterinarian who tried to save the horse. "They were in there doing everything they could," she said.

Brittany Holt, the teenager who was riding the horse Monday, told Channel 2 Action News that she was watching riders ahead of her and noticed that the ground seemed unstable. She said she jumped off the horse just in time.

The horse's efforts to escape just made the hole deeper, Holt said.

Authorities spent hours freeing the horse and finally got her out around 10:30, Sloan said.

Officials said the hole was 8 feet deep.
