Gwinnett Tax Commissioner Richard Steele is reminding homeowners that the deadline to apply for a homestead exemption is April 1 and is urging them to apply.

“Now is the time to make sure you are taking advantage of everything that can reduce how much you have to pay,” said Steele.

To receive the tax break, homeowners must own and occupy the property as their primary residence as of Jan. 1 of the tax year for which the application is being made. No exemptions are granted automatically; however, once an exemption is granted, there is no need to apply each year.
