A nonprofit organization in Roswell is getting a big boost from Georgia.

The Drake House, which works to assist homeless women and children in north Fulton County, was awarded funding from the Emergency Solutions Grant, given out by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

With $49,800 from the grant, the Drake House plans to put that money towards its emergency shelter, to assist with management, providing housing and services to the homeless population in north Fulton County.

According to the Drake House's website, more than 55 percent of poverty level families in Alpharetta and Johns Creek are single family households.

“I commend The Drake House for all of their hard work in our local community,” Sen. John Albers, R-Roswell, said in a statement. “It is great to see that DCA recognized their contribution to ending homelessness by awarding them this necessary funding. While our area is experiencing a lot of economic growth and opportunities, we must not forget the most vulnerable in our communities.”

The Drake House strives to help families remain in their communities, keep their children in public schools, preserve the family unit and create opportunities for employment.

The Emergency Solutions Grant aims to provide funds for “street outreach, emergency shelter, rapid re-housing, homelessness prevention, and related services to persons experiencing homelessness or in danger of becoming homeless throughout the state.”

The funding from the program can also be used to help people living with HIV.
