Hiram City Manager Barry Atkinson announced his intention to resign after serving seven months.

He cited several reasons, including the City Council’s layoff of “seven very capable and well-trained employees,” leading to “an air of uncertainty for the remaining employees” and “significant staffing reductions.”

With the city’s $250,000 excess in expenditures - even with staffing cuts, Atkinson said employee healthcare expenses are expected to increase between eight and 20 percent.

“My leadership style does not blend well with this elected body,” he added.

It is not clear when his resignation will take effect.

Hiram Mayor Teresa Philyaw and the City Council will hold a special session at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Public Safety Training Room, City Hall, 217 Main St.
