A local church and private school’s plan for a lighted athletic complex is moving forward, albeit slowly, after a favorable decision by the Henry County Board of Commissioners. The board voted Feb. 20 to approved requested modifications to zoning conditions for property at 787 and 795 Mt. Olive Road regarding athletic fields.

This is across the street from Community Bible Church and Community Christian School, which have been making plans for nearly a decade in hopes of using the land in this way. A conditional use request in May of 2008 was denied by the Zoning Advisory Board but the church’s appeal was granted by the Board of Commissioners with 13 conditions. Those conditions included a prohibition of exterior lighting as well as loudspeakers or public address systems, and a stipulation that any new buildings or additions be architecturally compatible with the existing structures in the surrounding areas. The church and school, seeking to have the property eventually suitable for night games, requested modification of those conditions.
