A Stone Mountain-area restaurant failed its recent health inspection, with officials noting improperly cleaned utensils and raw meats stored in close proximity to ready-to-eat foods.

The American Deli location at 1825 Rockbridge Road scored a 53/U on its Thursday inspection.

According to the inspection report, the restaurant had cases of raw chicken stored over an open case of lettuce in the walk-in cooler and raw shrimp stored next to sauerkraut and mushrooms. Officials also reported an "opened case of fish with severe signs of time and temperature abuse." A bag of frozen french fries was also stored at room temperature.

In addition, the report noted that an employee was observed "cleaning grill utensils without sanitizing" them, and that toothpaste and a toothbrush were stored on the kitchen sink.

A message left for the restaurant's manager was not immediately returned Friday afternoon. According to its website, American Deli has more than 120 locations, including nearly a dozen in Gwinnett County.

A follow-up inspection will be completed within 10 days of Thursday's evaluation.
