Aging water mains in the Peachtree Station subdivision will soon be replaced. Gwinnett commissioners recently awarded an almost $1.51 million contract to Dickerson Group Inc. for phase one of the project.

District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard said an agreement between Gwinnett and Peachtree Corners will allow for the water main replacement to take place at the same time as a repaving project previously planned by the city. Since pipe replacement normally disturbs only about a third of the roadway, the city will pay for the portion of the contract that covers repaving the remainder of the streets.

“To avoid disrupting the community twice, the county will manage both the pipe construction and street paving that Peachtree Corners was planning to do, said Howard. “This is another excellent example of how the county works closely with city governments to operate efficiently and effectively as good stewards of taxpayer dollars.”

The existing PVC and cast-iron pipes have broken 16 times in the subdivision in the past seven years as they approach the end of their useful life. They will be replaced by about 8,900 feet of eight-inch ductile iron pipe.
