Georgia’s new law (effective July 1, 2013), now refers to records expungement as “record restriction” and has increased the type of cases available for restriction. Record restriction means that eligible records on your criminal history report are restricted from public view. Yet the records are available to law enforcement for criminal justice and employment purposes.

The Gwinnett County Solicitor’s Office is hosting a Restriction Summit for misdemeanors 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at Student Union Building E at Georgia Gwinnett College, 1000 University Parkway in Lawrenceville.

To have a criminal record reviewed for restriction, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

• Arrested in Gwinnett County jurisdiction

• Must not be convicted/found guilty at trial

• Did not plead guilty/no lo contendere

• Certain misdemeanors while under the age of 21

• Completed a pre-trial diversion program

• Completed “first offender” case
