Gwinnett Commissioners authorized Sheriff Butch Conway on March 3 to enter into an agreement with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and the Regional Commission on Homelessness to provide homeless individuals released from the Gwinnett County Jail with shelter, substance abuse treatment, job skills training, crime prevention education, and case management assistance as an overall collaborative effort to reduce recidivism.

Since implementation three years ago the Gwinnett Re-Entry Intervention Program has provided assistance to 620 inmates, with 73 of those re-arrested for a recidivism rate of 11.6 percent, according to the sherriff’s office. To continue the program, the county will provide $100,000 from the Inmate Fund for FY 2015, and contingent upon available resources, provide $100,000 for FY 2016 and 2017 for a total of $300,000.
