Officers from the Gwinnett County and Norcross police departments were caught on camera Tuesday while comforting a dog that had been hit by a car.

A man who witnessed the compassionate moments sent a note (and photos) to Norcross police Chief Bill Grogan. Here's what it said, according to a post on the Norcross Police Department Facebook page:

"I was touched and impressed this morning as I came to work at Northbelt and saw a Gwinnett County officer comforting a dog that had been hit by a car near our entrance sign. I pulled up into the parking lot and watched as he comforted and gave water to the injured dog. Soon thereafter City of Norcross officers arrived and assumed the care that had been provided by the Gwinnett county officer. Your officer stated that he couldn't just let him stay there and suffer. He had called animal control and was staying there until they arrived. Hopefully he can be treated and survive.

I have attached a few photos showing the officers giving the dog water and attempting to comfort him/her.

Just wanted to share this with you and convey my respect for police and all they do. I'm sure that there are those who think that other issues could have been attended to but this I think shows the real human/compassionate face of police officers."

The dog ultimately succumbed to its injuries, Gwinnett County animal control officials said Wednesday.

"The compassion shown by the officers pictured is to be commended," assistant manager Cindy Wiemann said.
