Though some sections have been open for nearly a year, the Beacon Municipal Center gets an official dedication noon Saturday at the corner of Electric Avenue and Trinity Place.

The 33,000 square-foot complex is not only the most expensive public facility in city history, costing roughly $39 million, it’s also the most ambitious. Features include an open courtyard, a projection screen on the City Schools Decatur central office building, a glass/brick/stucco police and municipal courts building and a renovation of the circa 1949 Ebster Gym.

It stands on the site once occupied, at various times from 1913 to 1967, by black schools Herring Street, Beacon and Trinity.

Saturday’s lead speaker is Mayor Emerita Elizabeth Wilson, with the ceremony featuring many alumni from Beacon Elementary and Trinity High.
