Gary George, director of public safety for Alpharetta, will retire at the end of January, the city announced recently.

Alpharetta leaders say they have begun a nationwide search for George’s successor and expect to make their selection by December.

Since taking the public safety director’s job in August 2001, George led the merger of police, fire, communications and emergency services into a single, unified department. Doing so “engaged our constituents, shortened our emergency response times and achieved the highest and best service rating possible,” said Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle.

George has served in law enforcement for more than four decades, beginning in 1970 as a police officer in Independence, Mo. He rose through the ranks and was named Independence police chief in 1997. George has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration and a master’s degree in public affairs “public management” from Park University, Missouri.
